Chapter 16

If Mordon’s smile was a bared weapon when he was a man, it was something altogether nightmarish in dragon form. He stooped down, folded his sail-like wings in one by one, and lowered himself until his massive head was right in front of Kaelan. And he waited.

She swallowed. She tried to speak, but nothing came out. She waited a moment, reminded herself that she was not prey, not something small and fragile to be cowed into submission, and tried again. “I will not run from you,” she told him, though her voice quavered and her knees shook.

But it was the right response. “I’m glad,” Mordon replied. He tilted his head, a strangely alien movement. She’d never seen a dragon so large. Lasaro was barely a quarter his size.

Lasaro. The moment she thought of him, she checked the bond, making sure it was tied off tightly. He couldn’t be allowed to sense her fear, to know what was happening. He would come running to protect her, and he was in no state to protect anyone right now. Not that he’d be likely to stand much of a chance against Mordon in the first place.

Mordon. Her father. One of the few full dragons left, and as ancient as Alveria itself if she remembered her little tattered dragon book correctly. He’d been the most powerful master to ever teach at the Akademy and had even been its headmaster once. Her head jerked as she remembered the nightmares she’d had on her journey last fall—how she’d seen a massive black dragon, one that was both dangerous and wanted to teach her, the way she’d sensed she was supposed to meet him. It would seem those dreams had been prophetic after all.

And what of the other prophecy, the one Lasaro had shown her? What could Mordon want, except to make it come true? He’d known so much about her when they’d first met. Like he’d been watching her, like he’d already known everything about her. Like he’d wanted her to go to the Akademy. Like he’d known, even then, that it would all lead to this moment: her, alone in the woods with no allies, in his power.

“What do you want?” she dared to ask.

“I’ve already told you.”

“I won’t be your spy.”

“Even to save the dragons?”

She hesitated. He was a usurper. He wanted the throne, wanted to put her on it instead of Lasaro, and would slay the entire royal family to see it done. She couldn’t let that happen. But Mordon had strength and magic that she’d never even heard of, and if anyone could find a cure, it was him.

The choice lay in front of her. To refuse her father, and let poison ravage the dragons—or pledge loyalty to the kingdom’s greatest enemy, and save the boy she loved.

She inhaled. The air scraped like daggers against her throat. “How do I know you didn’t just plant the toxin yourself?”

His eyes narrowed. “I want to save the dragons as much as you. Not just from poison, but from weakness.
